Jan Hendrik married Aaltje (Alice) Shoemaker Jan. 28, 1869 in Fillmore, Allegan, Michigan.

In 1878 the Jan Hendrik Vedders family moved from Michigan to Iowa and from there on to New Holland, S. Dakota hoping to find a drier climate for the sake of Hendrik Vedders who had very poor lungs. Here the Hendrik Vedders family made there home a mile east of New Holland, It was at New Holland that the Likkels and the Vedders families became good friends which resulted in the marriage of Gerrit Likkel to Dena Vedders on Aug.31, 1885.

In 1895 Alice moved to Pease, Minnesota with her two sons, Fred and William and brother in-law Hermannes in search of better land.
The 1910 Census shows Alice living with her son William's family and her brother in-law Harmanes in Pease, where she died in 1916.
