Ada Marie Halsey Cottrell, 100, of Smithers, died April 4, 2011.

Born Oct. 14, 1910, in Harewood, she was the daughter of the late John and Ada Totten Conley. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 10 years and father of her children, Basil Halsey, and her later husband, Harry Cottrell, who she was married to for 23 years; her grandson, Randy Craigo; sisters, Maggie Hicks, Dorothy Summers and Lucille Lively; brothers, George Conley, Charlie Conley, Clarence Conley and John Conley; and stepson, Jackie Lee Cottrell.

On Oct. 14, 2010, she was presented the Order of the 35th Star Proclamation from the Governor's office for her 100th birthday at an open house given to her by the city of Smithers.

Through her civic organization she helped with the Beautification Project in Smithers and helped to organize the annual Smithers Christmas Parade. She was a member of the Smithers Civic Club, having served as treasurer for a number of years.

Ada had resided in Smithers for 70 years and is a remarkable lady. She was left a widow in 1939 to raise four children and at times she worked three jobs to support the family. She was a cashier for A&P Grocery in Montgomery for 26 years.

After retirement she was most helpful to her friends, driving them to their doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, etc. — remarkable for a woman her age.

Surviving: her children, Vera Halsey Craigo and her husband, Robert, of Amelia, Ohio, Barbara Halsey Lucas of Smithers and twins Pauline Halsey Gonzales and her husband, Luis, of Alexandria, Va., and Paul Halsey and his wife, Patricia, of Dale City, Va.; brother, James Conley of Logan; grandchildren, Steven Craigo, Michael Frank, Tamara Kitchen, Sandra Willis, Lisa Gonzales-Migliozzi, Jean Ann Baum, Donna Casto, Diana Halsey Clark and Tina Spille; great-grandchildren, Randal Arias, Jamie Kitchen, Jennifer Kitchen, Aaron Kitchen, Angela Alvarado, Jessica Willis, Mathew Migliozzi, Michael Migliozzi, Erik Baum, Alex Baum, Ethan Casto, Aidan Casto, Ella Casto, Rebekah Lehman and Jenna Spille; great-great- grandchildern, Brianna Kitchen and William Arias; stepchild, Jackie Lee Cottrell; stepgrandchildren, Donald and Ronald Cottrell; stepgreat-grandchildren, Lacey, Thasa, Corey, Hobey, Chloe and Keyan Cottrell; sister-in-law, Thelma Conley; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held April 8 at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with Rev. Kim Kirby and Elder Jim Dempsey officiating. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.
