Edward was the youngest child of Edward and Dora (Johannsen) Wichmann; born in Denver while it was still the county seat of Arapahoe County. The family eventually lived across the street from a Denver fire station and Eddie, with his older brother, used to chase the horse drawn fire wagons down the street and watch the firemen at work. When he grew up Ed became a fireman for the city of Denver. Ed was a heavy drinker, a "man's man" and this led to difficulty in his personal life. He would have to be considered the Black Sheep of the family, though he was well loved by his brother, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was married to Esther Rudman on March 4, 1922 in Denver and they had one son. The couple divorced in the 1930s.
