A. L. Jayne, Well Known Headlands Man, Succumbs
Alfred Luther Jayne, 72, a prominent Mentor Headlands rose grower and engineer, died early this morning at Hanna House, Lakeside Hospital, Cleveland, following an illness of several weeks. His home was on Headlands Rd.
Mr. Jayne had been an engineer at the Painesville Water Works for 26 years and had been a nurseryman for many more years in this community where he had resided most of his life. He was born in Geneva on July 26, 1872, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Luther R. Jayne. Rev. Mr. Jayne had been a Baptist minister but had never held a pastorate here, moving to this community following his retirement.
Survivors of Alfred Jayne are his wife, Mrs. Stella Moodey Jayne, a daughter, Mrs. Marian J. Smith of Cleveland; three sons, Justin H., Donald T. and Lawrence M. all of the Headlands; two step-children, Mrs. Carol Moodey Ross of Meadville, Pa. and William Curtis Moodey of Painesville; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Nye of Perry, and Mrs. L. T. Curtis of Painesville; and nine grandchildren. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Spear Funeral Home beginning Tuesday noon and funeral services will be held there Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery.
