The son of Jacob & Anna Elizabeth (Eckenrode) Bolen (although the death certificate lists his mother as Mary Ann Rife), in 1860 he was a farmer living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 3" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle March 14, 1864, and mustered into federal service there March 16 as a private with Co. B, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). On June 17, 1865, he transferred to Co. B, 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, as part of a war end consolidation and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1865.

He married Anna Mary Catherine Griener September 3, 1868, and fathered Laura M. (b. 05/11/69), John Oliver (b. 1872), and Lulie O. (b. 1873). In 1882, he lived with his family in Idaville, Adams County, in 1890, in Tyrone Township, Adams County, but by 1920, was a resident of Harrisburg. After Anna Mary's death, he married Albertha "Bertha" Sprinkle November 7, 1922. Cause of his death is listed as "cancer of intestines."
