Judge Joe McLaughlin was in the legal profession for more than 50 years. In 1909 he graduated from University of Illinois law school and entered into the legal profession at Whitley and Fitzgerald in Decatur, where he worked for six years. In 1912, he married Nellie Whitchurch, and in 1915 he moved his young family to Sullivan and started his own law firm. This is where he lived the rest of his life.

He served as the Judge of the 6th Judicial Circuit from 1933 to 1939. In 1958 he was a candidate for county judge of Moultrie County, but was defeated in the primary.

He had three sons, Joseph Knox McLaughlin, John Whitchurch McLaughlin and James Monroe McLaughlin.
