Joseph was born in the Millers Creek community to John Warren and Velitia Bullis Rash. His grave is in the Stephen bumgarner Cemetery.

Joseph and Matilda built a large, handsome log house on land she recieved from her father. The huge logs were hand hewn, mortised, and pinned with wooden pins. The cracks were chinked with mud, making it very snug and windproof.

At thirty-nine, an early age for his long-lived family, Joseph died unexpectedly. His body was found in a fence corner after he failed to return from hunting rabbits. Relatives believed that his death was the result of a seizure. He was subject to seizures when he drank, and he had taken a bottle with him.

Matilda was thus left with three children to care for. The oldest, Becky, had been married ten months and was not in the home. The second child, Wesley, had died at age three. That left Martha, Stephen, and "Little Nancy," who was then six. Little Nancy lived to be nine, and died in the epidemic of 1879.
