Robert Harry "Bob" Hunter, Jr., 85, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Winchester Medical Center.

He was born April 19, 1924 in Marshall, VA; the son of Robert H. Hunter Sr. and Grace Caricofe Hunter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a volunteer firefighter for Fairfax County. He then became one of the first paid firemen, before retiring as a Battalion Chief in 1981. He then worked at Kern Motors for seventeen years. He was a member of the Winchester Moose 1283 and the Winchester Masonic Lodge Hiram 21.

He married Betty Jane Shumate on July 13, 1946 in Vienna, VA.

He is survived by his wife, of Winchester; two granddaughters, Patricia A. Rinard of Winchester and Betty Virginia "Ginny" Grantham of Winchester; a great granddaughter, Madison J. Rinard of Winchester; three nephews, Larry Hunter of Virginia, Donnie Hunter of Virginia, and Doug Hunter and his wife Josie of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Lee Hunter and brother, William A. Hunter.

A Masonic service will be Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. with a visitation following until 9:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Hebron.

All family and friends are invited to the Winchester Moose following the services for fellowship.
