Imogene Dixon Tyre Gassett passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2021 under the care of her family and Hospice of South Georgia. Jean was born to Joseph Benjamin and Alma Winn Dixon on June 14th, 1930 in Pierce Co., Ga. She was raised on the family farm along with her siblings, Gernie, Iris and Alvis. After graduating from Patterson High School, she moved to Jesup where she met and married her first husband, James. L. "Jack" Tyre. Four children followed. Jack and Jean enjoyed fishing and hunting and staying on their houseboat on the Altamaha River. Having helped her sister-in-law in her restaurant and loving to cook, she opened her own restaurant in 1966. The Kiwi was a popular local eatery for many years. Her coconut pies, homemade cornbread dressing and many other dishes are remembered by many today. Sometime after Jack passed in 1973, Jean married Roy Hulon Gassett. They resided in Waycross until he retired, and then moved to Jesup. They enjoyed camping, fishing and golfing. Hulon passed in Nov. 2013. Jean was a long-time member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Jesup, Ga. and the Ladies Senior Adult Sunday School Class. She had previously served on the Wayne Co. Chamber of Commerce Board and was a member of The Pine Forest Ladies Golf Association. Preceding her in death, besides her parents, siblings and husbands, are daughter, Jackie Darling, son, Jeffrey Tyre, and stepson, Perry Gassett.
Surviving are daughters, Jimmie Ann (Robert) Lamb and Joy (Reed) Landon, step daughters, Cyd (Dickie) Gassett, Lisa (Kenny) Mitchell and Donna Dahlke; daughter-in-law, Deborah Tyre; son-in-law, Kenneth (Lucy) Darling; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 3 PM Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Vann Dempsey officiating. Private interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
