Leona May Kitchen, 76, of Nevada, died of cancer on Monday, May 6, at her home in Nevada.
She was born June 2, 1925, in Nevada to Harvey Edward and Maud (Burgess) Kitchen. She was a 1943 graduate of Nevada High School. A longtime employee of Nevada Telephone Company, she served through several changes in ownership. Among the positions she held were telephone operator, chief operator and office manager. She retired in 1983. She was an experienced caregiver and helped many family members, friends and neighbors following her retirement. She was a lifelong resident of Nevada, who enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and providing assistance to others.
Survivors include two sisters, Marjorie Henry of rural Boone and Ellen Kitchen of Ames, and a brother, Harry Kitchen of Ames.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held today, Thursday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial followed at the Woodland Cemetery in Iowa Center. A memorial fund has been established.
