SPRENGER; Father Alan M. Sprenger, age 75, died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Mother Angeline McCroy Manor. He was the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Sweeney) Sprenger, born August 18, 1930 in Cleveland Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother First Lt. Robert F. Sprenger, a marine Corps pilot killed in action in the South Pacific during WW II and his sisters Ruth Bittner of Cleveland Ohio, Carol Bartlett of Steubenville OH and Doris (Thornton) Banfield of Kirkland WA. He is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, great- and great-grand nieces, his extended Hemelgarm family and a half century of former students, parishioners and friends.
After graduating from Cathedral Latin High School in 1948, he joined the Brothers of Mary and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton in 1952. As Brother Sprenger, he taught at Chaminade High School in Dayton, OH and North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA. He joined the Diocese of Columbus in 1956 and received his MA in Education from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Fr. Sprenger was ordained a priest on May 28, 1960. He served many parishes and taught at Marion Catholic High School, Marion, OH and Bishop Ready and Father Wehrie High Schools in Columbus, OH. He was part of a team that was instrumental in curbing the use of corporal punishment in various school districts throughout the State of Ohio. In 1973, Fr. Sprenger, along with Joseph Friend, founded the Syntaxis Youth Homes, a set of five group homes caring for teenage wards of the court and county children services. At the time of his retirement in 2001, more than two thousand youth had lived there and been prepared for independent living as employable, responsible adults. Friends may call at St. Paul Church, 313 N. State St., Westerville, Ohio from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, and Thursday at the Church from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church, 313 N. State St., Westerville, OH. Burial in the Priests Section of St. Joseph Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday.
