Hattie Mae Johns, my grandmother, was born on Monday, 24 May 1897, and died Monday, 3 Jan 1916, of pneumonia. It was said that this was due to her diligence in doing the laundry in cold weather. She married George Vincent Croft and they had one child, my mother, Thelma Mae Croft (she later legally changed her name to Trudy in 1945). Hattie died when her baby was just 14 months old. Her husband grieved over her for the rest of his life.
