Donald L. Becker passed away on August 31, 2005, at the age of 89. He was born on April 24, 1916, in Osage, Minnesota, the eldest of 13 children of William and Emma (Schubert) Becker.
He served with the 110th Naval Construction Battalion, as a SeaBee in the Pacific during WWII, building roads, airstrips and living by the simple code of "Can Do!" Eight of his brothers and one sister also served their country. In 1941 most of his family moved to Washington and Don settled in Stanwood in the early 1950's. Don worked as an auto mechanic with Hays Motor Company, then with Rygmyr-Flannigan Dealership and finally with Frontier Ford, retiring in 1980. Don also served as head mechanic for Stanwood's "Lute-fisk Special" for many years. In Stanwood, he met and married Irene Ellingson in 1956. Irene passed away in 1964 and her daughter, Helen Anderson, passed away in 1999. He moved to Mount Vernon in 1966 and married Margaret Rude in 1968.
Don was proud to be a life-time member of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2586, and the American Legion Post 92.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Donna (Brent) Weaver; Donna's sister, Joan (John) Case; step-children, Wayne (Kathy) Rude, Bill (Judi) Rude, Marilyn (Lyle) Taplin, Richard (Sandi) Rude, Susan Marchant, Dennis (Beverly) Rude, Keith (Fran) Rude, and Pearl (Bob) Wambold; brothers and sisters, Hazel Berglund, Leo Becker, Jim Becker, Earl (Marion) Becker, Robert Becker, Dorothy Day, Duane Becker, and Ted (Shirley) Becker; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchil-dren, and great-great-grand-children.
A celebration of Don's life will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2005, at Hawthorne Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in Don's name to the Oncology Department of Skagit Valley Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the Humane Society of Skagit County. The family would like to thank the staff of Mira Vista Care Center for their care and support these last few weeks.
Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, 1825 E. College Way, Mount Vernon.
