Hilda Cole Espy Area author, artist
Hilda Cole Espy, 83, an author and artist from Delaware Water Gap, died Friday in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph Stanley and Margaret (Davis) Cole.
Her career was devoted to writing and she sold her first story in the mid-1930's. She wrote short stories for numerous magazines including Colliers, Ladies Home Journal, Woman's Home Companion and Woman's Day, where she also served as editor. She also handled press releases for CBS Radio when she lived in New York City. She became a press agent for Kate Smith, coining the phrase "The biggest thing in show business." In the late 1930's she went on the road as a press agent for Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians.
She married William R. Espy, a fellow author, and divorced in 1961. In the late 1950's she published her first book about her family, "Quiet Yelled Mrs. Rabbit," followed by "Look Both Ways" in the early 1960's.
She moved to Delaware Water Gap in 1981. In the past her time to painting and exhibited her works at the Dutot Museum, Delaware Water Gap. She was a deacon of the Church of the Mountain and a participant in the church's hiker center. She was a member of the Americans Concerned for Tomorrow.
She is survived by four daughters, Mona Espy Schreiber of New Orleans, La., Freddy Espy Plimpton of Long Island, N.Y., Joanna Espy of New York City and Cassin Espy/Speziali of Staten Island, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Jefferson Espy.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain, Delaware Water Gap with the Rev. Karen Nickels officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service at a reception in the church.

The funeral home told me that Hilda was cremated. The "ashes" were taken by the family and it is not known where they were taken.
