WHITAKER, BARBARA M. (BERNARD), 84, of Diamond Hill Road, a retired executive secretary, died Saturday at home. She was the wife of the late Robert D. Whitaker. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Thomas P. and Frieda M. (Kubasch) Bernard, she had lived in Warwick since 1953.
She was the executive secretary to the President of Puritan Life Insurance Company. A communicant of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Warwick, she had been active for many years in the Episcopal Church Women. During World War II, she volunteered with the U.S.O. She served as president and was a member of the board of managers of St. Elizabeth Home. Mrs. Whitaker was an avid award winning gardener. She was the loving mother of Lee R. Whitaker of Warwick and Dr. David M. Whitaker of Peacedale; the beloved grandmother of Alexandra M. Mackin and the cherished great grandmother of Thomas Scott Mackin and Erin Alexandra Mackin all of West Warwick.
A Requiem Eucharist will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 358 Warwick Neck Avenue, Warwick. Burial will take place in Glenford Cemetery, North Scituate. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours respectfully omitted. A reception will be held in the Parish House of St. Mary's Episcopal Church immediately following the Requiem Eucharist. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory to The American Diabetes Association, 222 Richmond Street, Providence, RI 02903, would be appreciated.
