US Senator. He was a Democrat congressman from Virginia. He served two nonconsecutive terms in the House of Representatives from 1837 to 1843 and from 1845 to 1847. While in the House of Representatives, he served as Speaker of the House from 1839 to 1841. He also served in the United States Senate from 1847 until he was expelled in 1861 for supporting the Confederate rebellion. From 1861 to1862, he served as the Confederate Secretary of State in Jefferson Davis' cabinet and from 1874 to 1880, he served as the State Treasurer of Virginia.
