Wayne Knutson was born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin on June 12, 1927. Wayne was baptized in the congregation his family was attending soon after his birth. He grew up working with his father and siblings on the family farm.

Just before the beginning of the Korean War, Wayne received a draft notice. Not wanting to be drafted into the Army, he instead chose to enlist in the Air Force. After receiving training as a parachute rigger, Wayne was eventually assigned to serve in Japan.

That is where he met his future wife. She was working at one of the offices on the base and Wayne would seem to be dropping by with "paperwork" quite a bit. Wayne had orders to report back to the States, but he was persistent in getting all of the necessary permissions signed off so that he and Terry could be married before he left. It seemed like an impossible feat, but Wayne was persistent, and accomplished the task in less than 45 days. They were married on November 12, 1953.

Wayne and his wife were stationed in many different installations during his Air Force career, which ended with his retirement in 1975. They choose San Bernardino as their retirement home, joining Lutheran Church of Our Savior soon after their arrival. Wayne was very active in the congregation serving as an usher up until a few weeks before his death.

Wayne died on July 25, 2011 at St. Bernardine's Medical Center surrounded by his wife of more than 57 years, and his daughter. He is also survived by one son of Connecticut; his brother Elton, and two sisters, all of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Wayne will be remembered for his gracious spirit and his warm and compassionate care for everyone he came in contact with. May God bless his memory among us.
