William married Elizabeth Y. "Betty" Thompson on Dec 22, 1866. They had nine children.

William Andrew Jackson Dunn was my great-great-grandfather on my Dad's side of the family.

William Dunn was assigned to Company C, 21st Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. The 21st Virginia Infantry was mustered into service in July of 1861 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Most of the men that comprised the regiment came from the city of Richmond, Virginia and the counties of Charlotte, Mecklenburg, Cumberland, Buckingham, and Pittsylvania. The regiment fought in some of the most major battles in the civil war to include the following: Battle of Antietam, Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of 2nd Bull Run, Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Cold Harbor.

One of the field officers of the 21st Virginia Infantry was Colonel (COL) John Mercer Patton Jr., a relative of General George S. Patton that commanded the third Army in World War II and was known as "Old Blood and Guts."
