Elaine Virginia Deskins Vass, 74, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital of complications from a heart attack. Born Nov. 11, 1927 on the Knobs in Monroe County, she was the daughter of the late John and Allie Sarver Deskins. Mrs. Vass was a lifelong resident of Sinks Grove and was a member of Sinks Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Brown Lee Vass in 1995; and brothers, Joe in 1998, Herman in 1937 and Clyde Deskins in 1928. Survivors include: daughter, Sylvia Cook and husband, Henly of Renick; sons, Steve Deskins and wife, Brenda of Ronceverte and Rick Vass and wife, Jane of Beaver; companion, Oather Brant of Sinks Grove; brothers, Garlin Deskins and wife, Martha of Baltimore, MD and John Deskin of Fort Lauderdale, FL; sisters-in-law, Martha Vass Helvey and husband, Wade of Sinks Grove and Pat Vass of Zion, IL; six grandchildren, Edward Lee Harvey, Jr. and companion, Terry of Charlotte, NC, Melanie Wills and husband, Ray of Nimitz, Leanna Sluss and husband, Arliss of Jumping Branch, Jeffery Deskins and wife, April of Ronceverte, Detrah Deskins of Princeton and Mary Beth DeLauder and husband, Joe of Rock Hill, SC; six great-grandchildren, Crystal Meadows, Alyssa Wills, Donovan Harvey, Justin Sluss, Kaithalin Deskins and Tyler Deskin; four step-grandchildren, Cynthia Cook, Wade Cook, Wesley Cook and Megan McCoy; step-great-grandchild, Jacob Wade Cook; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Services were held Nov. 1, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte where Rev. Walter Deskins officiated. Burial was in the Sinks Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
