Retired Army Col. John Douglass Peters, 99, Port Charlotte, died Aug. 23, 2006, at Harbor Health Center. He was born June 28, 1907, in Utica, N.Y., and came to Punta Gorda in 1977 from Columbus, Ohio, when he retired as as executive director for the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System. He was a veteran of World War II who attended the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was on active and reserve duty for 32 years. He was a member of Port Charlotte United Methodist Church, Masonic Goodale Lodge 372 and Scottish Rite Valley, both of Columbus, and a former member of the Isles Yacht Club, St. Andrews Golf Club, and the Peace River Power Squadron, all of Punta Gorda. Survivors include his wife of 76 years, Ruth M.; sons John E. of Santa Monica, Calif., David A. of Madison, Wis., and Darrell A. of Columbus. Memorial services were Friday at Port Charlotte United Methodist Church. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Roberson Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, handled arrangements.
