Mrs. Sabiston will be buried at the Core Creek Methodist Church with her husband. A viewing and reception by the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks Funeral Home.
She had been a resident of Harborview since April 2011. Born Sue Temperance Williams on June 18, 1918 in Beaufort County, she was the daughter of Joe and Mary Williams. She was one of nine children and was one of two surviving sisters. She grew up on the family farm located on Crab Point and attended the Camp Glenn and Morehead City schools. She was married to Milton Neal Sabiston from Core Creek in 1936.
Her husband was a civil service employee at Camp Lejeune for 30 years. They lived on the military base during World War II and later bought a home in Jacksonville where Sue was active in the Methodist Church and the Jacksonville Women's Garden Club. She was always interested in flowers, gardening and working the News and Observer crossword puzzles.
She moved to a new home on acreage at Crab Point in 2005 that was once part of the original family farm. She was able to live quietly on the Newport River for five years with assistance from Mary and Frances Hamann, her sister and brother-in-law who lived next door and Pam Smith of Beaufort as her caregiver.
She is survived by her son Larry Sabiston and wife Faye of Marietta, Ga.; her youngest sister, Edna Mason of Morehead City; grandchildren, Leah and Ron Redner, Noel and Stacey Sabiston and Paul and Kelli Sabiston; and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Regan Redner, Chloe, Wesley and Hudson Sabiston, and Natalie and Eric Sabiston. She has many nieces and nephews in Carteret County and North Carolina.
