K. Philip Koontz, 82, of Elkton, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Bridgewater Home.

Mr. Koontz was born March 12, 1927, in Page County, and was the son of the late N. Kerle and Elsie Strickler Koontz.

He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1949 with a business degree. He was a lifelong member of Elkton United Methodist Church and served in the Army during WWII. He farmed most of his life, which was his passion. He also worked at Merck and was a self-employed contractor, in addition to full-time farming.

On Aug. 27, 1949, he married Rena Blanchard Koontz, who survives. He is preceded in death by a sister, Jean Dickson.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth Koontz II and wife, Pat, of Luray; two daughters, Dianne Koontz Lowman of Elkton and Karen Koontz Campbell and husband, Marshall, of Elkton; three grandchildren, Heath Lowman and wife, Jeannie, of Luray, Shawn Campbell and wife, Rebecca, of Shenandoah, and Duane Campbell of Phoenix, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Kalee Lowman of Luray, Caleb Lowman of Luray, Aaron Campbell of Shenandoah and Sierra Campbell of Shenandoah; two brothers, Noah Koontz and David Koontz; three sisters, Gertrude Hammer, Charlotte Blanchard and Joan Shifflett; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with the Rev. David Reynolds officiating.

Burial will follow in the Koontz Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and any other time at the home of Marshall and Karen Campbell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elkton United Methodist Roof Fund, 205 Warren St., Elkton, VA 22827, or Elkton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 152, Elkton, VA 22827.
