James Rogers
Services for James Samuel "Joe" Rogers, 73, of Millersville, were held this morning at Baldwin United Methodist Church in Millersville.
Mr. Rogers died of cancer Dec 30 at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was a mechanical engineer and technician at the former National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which became the National Aeronatics and Space Administration, at Langley Field in Virginia. He then was with NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, where he was instrumental in developing the Radio Astronomy Explorer satellite and the Spartan and Pegasus programs.
He retired in 1979 after 35 years with NASA, then remained with the space program as a contractor until retiring again in 1994.
A native of Gonyon, Va., he attended Heathsville High School in Heathsville, Va. and Langley Field Apprentice School.
He was a member of Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church in Millersville, and was interested in wood crafting, gardening and country music.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, the former Gladys Boothe; two sons, James and Michael Rogers of Glen Burnie; one daughter Kathy Radke of Millersville; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Carrie Lee Bryant and Mary Ann Dawson of Heathsville, Otelia Robertson of Tappahannock, Va., and Kathleen Wissig of Ellicott City; and two brothers Ray Rogers, Jr. of Reedville, Va., and John Rogers of Richmond, Va.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, 921 Generals Highway, Millervile, MD 21108, or the Herald Harbor Volunteer Fire Company, Crownsville, MD 21032.
