ROCKY MOUNT - Dr. Margaret White Battle, 94, died December 24, 2003. She was the first woman doctor to practice obstetrics and gynecology in Rocky Mount. Many patients from nearby areas came to her home office to be treated by a female doctor. She was beloved by generations of eastern North Carolina mothers whose babies she delivered.
Keenly interested in family genealogy and local history, she was a member of the Nash County Historical Association and took great pride in the preservation of historic Stonewall. She was also active in the registration of Nash County graveyards with the N.C. Department of Archives and History.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. N.P. Battle in 1990. She is survived by her son, O.B. Battle and wife Shelby of Rocky Point, NC; her daughter, Anne Battle Poole and husband Jim of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Beth Battle Cone and husband Dan of Zebulon, Chris Poole of Reston, VA, Stephen Poole of Mexico City, Mexico, Jess Battle of Rocky Point, NC; devoted caregiver, Ophelia Horne of Rocky Mount; and a dear friend, Christine Riley of Nashville.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, December 29, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd. There will be a brief get-together after the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Friends of Hospice, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or to Stonewall Manor, c/o Nash County Historical Association, 2311 Sunset Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
