s/o Ovila Auclair + Angelina Racine.
After graduating from Assumption School, Millbury, he was only able to complete 3 years at Millbury Memorial High School before enlisting in the U. S. Coast Guard at the outbreak of World War II. The Town of Millbury recognized his patriotism on November 12, 2000, when he was awarded his diploma at a special ceremony honoring all World War II veterans who sacrificed their education in order to serve their country. Nel was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class in 1945 after serving at several shore stations and as a crewmember of the USS DAVENPORT (PF-69) on convoy duty and on antisubmarine patrols in the North Atlantic. When the war ended he was aboard the USS LST-327, preparing for the invasion of Japan. Nel worked as a picker and second hand for 20 years at The Felters Co., Millbury. He then was a shipper/receiver at New England High Carbon Wire, Millbury, for 14 years and an inspector for 5 years at Wyman-Gordon Co, North Grafton, before retiring in 1985. Gifted with a fine tenor voice, Nel sang in the Our Lady of the Assumption parish childrens and adult choirs for most of his life, retiring in 2007. After returning from active duty, he sang frequently at the Hilltop Restaurant, South Grafton, Club Cosmo, North Grafton, The Moors, Shrewsbury, and other local clubs. He also sang on Worcester Radio Station WTAG, in many amateur stage shows, and at numerous weddings and other social functions. He was a member of Charles F. Minney Post #3329, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Millbury, Dudley-Gendron Post #414, American Legion, Sutton, and Mumford Council #365, Knights of Columbus, Whitinsville. He was also a member of the Millbury Old Timers and was named the 2008 Honored Old Timer at their 63rd Reunion. An avid New England Patriots fan, he has held season tickets for 35 years. He enjoyed gardening.
