Margaret was a member of a well-known pioneer family in Lindsay where her father and mother, Paschal and Addie Bequette, were local ranchers. The Bequette family came to California in 1853, and her great-grandmother was Mary Graves Clarke, who came to California in 1846 with the Donner Party.
She graduated from Strathmore high school, attended Fresno State College, and Berkeley. Later she worked as a legal secretary in a law office in Visalia where she met her future husband, James K. Abercrombie. Together they settled in Visalia where they raised their family--two sons and a daughter.
While tending to her family she also volunteered for the Red Cross and Visalia Community Hospital Auxiliary. She survived her husband Jim by twenty-eight years and in 1980 moved to the Pebble Beach home they had built for a vacation getaway in 1965, making the Monterey Peninsula her permanent home.
Margaret had three passions, her family, her gardening and golf. Family came first. She was never happier than when surrounded by her loving family and her generosity and kindness toward each of them was legendary. Her other two loves also gave her great joy. She was an avid gardener and horticulturist, easily recalling the botanical names of plants much to the delight of family and friends. Last, but not least, upon her marriage, she tackled the game of golf with her characteristic determination, humor and grace. She was a member of the Visalia Country Club and in 1953 she and Jim joined the Monterey Peninsula Country Club where she played golf well past the age of 80.
Margaret was a bright, funny, warm, considerate and caring woman who will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Margaret Abercrombie passed away peacefully in her home.
Margaret is survived by her older sister, Charlotte Bequette Chrisman of Visalia, her son James K. Abercrombie (wife Linda) who live in Coffee Creek, son LeBon Abercrombie (wife Mary Jane) of Pebble Beach and daughter Susan Abercrombie of Monterey. Much to her delight, she lived to enjoy six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and an extended family of many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She requested that there be no funeral and that her remains be interred next to her beloved family in Visalia. A special note of thanks from the family goes to her physicians and caregivers, who treated her with such love and respect.
