Vernon Paul Barbour Sr., 85, of 155 Ferrell Lane, Axton, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville.

Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late James Millard Barbour and the late Gertrude Hines Barbour. His wife, Louise Ferrell Barbour, died Nov. 29, 1994. He also was preceded in death by a son, Paul Barbour; a brother, Edward Toler Barbour; and two sisters, Edith Barbour and Beatrice Meadows.

He was a World War II Army veteran and had resided in the Axton community most of his life. He retired as a shipping clerk at Bassett Furniture Industries after 30 years of service.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Agee and Sandra Swinney, both of Axton, and Verna Herring of Martinsville; one son, Steve Barbour of Axton; four sisters, Callie Jones of Danville, Catherine Moore of Fieldale, and Boyard Barbour and Elizabeth Williams, both of Danville; nine half-brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Vernon Paul Barbour Sr., 85, of 155 Ferrell Lane, Axton, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville.
