In 1862, Edwin Warriner, at the age of 43, enlisted as a Pvt. for 9 months service in the 52nd Regiment Infantry, Massachusetts volunteers, Company E. He was mustered out August 14, 1863, at Camp Miller, Greenfield, Mass. Edwin Warriner was one of the oldest to serve in his unit. Served at Port Hudson, Louisiana.

In September 1881, less than a year prior to his death, Edwin and his wife travelled from Hawley, Massachusetts, to Parkersburg, Iowa, for a visit with the family of another Hawley native, Otis Baker, Mrs. Baker being a sister of Mrs. Warriner. Also visiting in Parkersburg at that time was a brother of the sisters, Elisha Crowell, from Decatur, Nebraska.
