The son of Gustave Boerner and Margaretha Bopp, Otto's mother died in childbirth in 1882. His father, Gustave, then married Bertha Yerk. He died in 1892.

Otto married Sophia "Sophie" Dill on 27 or 23 May 1899 in Adams County, Illinois. He was a carpenter, and they were the parents of at least 5 children. He worked for the Chapline Construction Company for a time, and the family lived in Maplewood, St. Louis County, Missouri for many years.

He was a member of Maplewood Lodge No. 566, A.F. and A.M. He also belonged to Scottish Rite and Carpenters' Local 1739.

Otto died at his home of a cerebral hemorrhage 3 days after his 72nd birthday.

He was survived by his wife, Sophie; 2 daughters, Flora Ross and Mary Crews; 2 sons, Adolph Boerner and Otto Boerner, Jr.; his grandchildren; 1 brother, Adolph Boerner; 1 sister, Ida Juenger; and many extended family members.

In addition to his mother, Otto was preceded in death by his father; and an infant son, Roy Boerner.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 30 Jul 1945 at the J. B. Smith Funeral Home on Manchester in St. Louis, Missouri.

Otto's wife, Sophie, passed away in 1948 and was buried next to him.
