Joseph Allen Sr., 80, of Cass Lake died Sunday, Sept. 11, 1994 at the Cass Lake Indian Health Service Hospital. Funeral services were at American Legion in Cass Lake. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at Cass Lake.

Mr. Allen was born Oct. 22, 1913 in Cass Lake, the son of Joseph and Clara Allen. He grew up and went to school in the Cass Lake area and went to work in a logging camp at the age of 12. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in the South Pacific Theater on Corregidor. He was in the Bataan Death March and was a prisoner of war for 11 months before escaping. He received two Purple Hearts and a Star Cluster. He married Ileane L. Ellis Nov. 6, 1944 in Bemidji. Following his discharge in 1945, he was self-employed as a saw mill operator and sawyer and also worked for the City of Cass Lake as a maintenance supervisor for many years. He was honored at the water carnival three years ago as the oldest living sawyer in the area. He was an active member of Jack Kimball American Legion Post 284 of Cass Lake until his death.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Joseph Carl (Kathie) Allen Jr. of Grand Rapids and James Russell (Brenda) Allen of Cass Lake; three daughters, Patricia Lee (Leo) Anderson and Mary Kay (Norman) Lindsey, both of Cass Lake, and Gail Ann (Dan) Bredemus of Grand Rapids; six grand-children; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl (Shirley) Allen and Bob Allen, both of Snohomish, WA; two sisters, Goldie Bobitz of San Pedro, CA, and Luella James of Hibbing; and a stepmother, Hazel Allen of Springfield, OR. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Jean Marcell, and three brothers. (Bemidji Pioneer Sept. 13, 1994.)
