The U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles about Hugh R Long reveal that about 1863, Hugh enlisted as a Corporal in Company B of the 8th Infantry Regiment Tennessee (Union), and before he he mustered out was promoted to Sargent. The 8th Infantry Regiment Tennessee, Mustered out on June 26, 1865.
Tennessee State Marriages, confirms that Hugh R Long chose Orlena F. Henderson to be his bride on Dec. 23, 1869 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee. From this marriage the following children were born:
Lucy LONG 1874;
Jonathan Riley LONG 1876 – 1935;
Orlena Isesbell LONG 1877 – 1950;
John Thomas LONG 1880 – 1953;
David Nelson LONG 1882 – 1925;
Leaner V Seaner V LONG 1884;
Francis M LONG 1887.
In 1880 Hugh was farming in rural Saint Clair Tennessee. He and Orlena had now had 3 children, Lucy was 6, Jonathan was 4 and Orlena was 2 years old.
From family sources it has been learned that Hugh's dear Orlena F.Henderson Long passed away on October 18, 1899, in Bulls Gap Tennessee. Hugh selected a burial plot for his dear Orlena in the Long and Berry Cemetery. He gathered his family and friend around him at his beloved Orlena's final resting place to bid her farewell and to "Rest in Peace.
In 1900 the census found Hugh living on his farm. The census gave the location as White Horn. He had not moved. White Horn is a historical post office in the Bulls Gap, Saint Clair area. Hugh was listed as owner of the farm and John T, David N, Leaner V, and Francis M. were still at home. John and David was doing the labor to operate the farm.
The 1920 census revealed that Hugh was living with his widowed daughter Belle Rhea in rural Bulls Gap Tennessee. Belle was the head of the household and she was the owner of the farm. Five of Belle's children were living at home and their was no apparent source of income. Probably the land was rented out.
Family sources revealed that Hugh R. Long passed away in Bulls Gap, Tennessee on May 15, 1921, and was interned at the Long and Berry cemetery. The Photo of his tombstone was also supplied by family. His children and grandchildren gathered at his grave site to bid their beloved father and grandfather farewell. He was buried near his dearly loved Orlena where they both "Rest in Peace" (Bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
