RUSSELL A. WOOD RITES HELD HERE; ACCIDENT VICTIM

Funeral services for Russell A. "Rusty" Wood, long-time Holyoke farmer and former well known ball player, were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Holyoke Methodist church. Officiating minister was Rev. Willis Wisehart of Julesburg, and the Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wood, who was 55 years of age, was killed in a tractor accident Monday morning, June 26, near the George Trumper home five miles southeast of Holyoke. Enroute to a field to do some work, Mr. Wood died instantly when the tractor turned over in a ditch after the wheels struck the soft shoulder of a county road.

A son of Nathan Stephen Wood and Lillie Helena Hohnbaum Weed, Russell Arlo Wood was born September 14, 1911, at Loomis, Nebraska. When he was about 6 years of age, the family moved to what is now the Carl Ferguson farm in the Wages community southwest of Holyoke. Later the Wood family moved to the Cement area southeast of Holyoke and Rusty was graduated from the eighth grade at the Cement school.

Except for about a year in the mid 1920s, when he lived in King County, Washington and Denver, Mr. Wood resided in the Holyoke area. He began playing baseball with the Amherst town team when 11 years of age and was one of this territory's best known baseball players for 30 years. He was elected all-star catcher in Denver from 1934 until 1942. Over a period of many years he played ball with Holyoke, Haxtun and many other teams. After ending his baseball and softball playing days he coached baseball in the American Legion Junior league. In later years he became interested in bowling and was active in local bowling leagues.

On November 14, 1936, he was united in marriage to Ernestine Lane at Littleton, Colorado. To this union three children were born, who survive.

Preceding Mr. Wood in death were his parents, one sister, Fern Wood, and one grandson, Jeffry Wayne Searcy.

Survivors include his wife, Ernestine, Holyoke; one son, Clinton Lee, Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Carol Jeanne (Mrs. Charles) Searcy, Edmond, Oklahoma, and Nancy Lucille (Mrs. David) Sprague, Sedgwick, Colorado; two sons-in-law, Charles Searcy and David Sprague; one daughter-in-law, Janet (Mrs. Clinton) Wood; four brothers, Virgil Wood, Wray, Marlin Wood, Denver, Dale Wood, Holyoke, and Corwin Wood, Gulfport, Mississippi; three sisters, Miss Carmen Wood, Holyoke, Mrs. Norma McCormick, Englewood, and Mrs. Lila Alee, Broomfield; seven grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
