DEATH TAKES EMMA KOUNS AT AGE OF 89: Resident of Lake County for 84 Years (April 5, 1947)
Death, following a long illness, yesterday afternoon claimed the life of Emma Augusta DeWolf Kouns at the age of 89. The elderly lady had been a resident of Middletown since 1910 and known to all here. Becoming quite ill within the past few months, her last days were spent at a rest home in Clearlake Highlands. Mrs. Kouns had resided in Lake county for nearly 84 years and would have reached her 90th birthday come August.
Emma Augusta DeWolf Kouns was born August 27, 1857 at Belvedere, Illinois, the eldest child of George and Susan Thompson DeWolf.
She crossed the plains by oxen train with her foster parents, Charles Lisle and Lucie Wilson, arriving in California September of 1862. They then settled on Grand Island in Sacramento River.
In November of 1863, she come to Lake county, settling in Lower Lake. Here she received her education in public and private schools and was awarded her teaching certificate in 1872. She then taught school in Burns Valley and at the first school organized in the Blue Lakes sector.
On March 12, 1876, she was united in marriage to Abraham Rice Kouns at Lower Lake. To this union were born four children: Lucy, Ira, Lisle and Bertha. All are deceased but the latter, Mrs. Bertha Brookins of Middletown.
Funeral services for the grand lady will be held Saturday afternoon, April 5, 2:00 pm at the Middletown Community church. The Simic Funeral Parlor of Calistoga will conduct the services, followed by interment at the family plot in the Lower Lake cemetery.
The deepest of sympathy is extended the surviving relatives in the loss of this true pioneer of the west and Lake county.
