The following is Elizabeth's obit from the Nashville Banner-June 14, 1895:
Mrs. Elizabeth D. Gilbert, age 86 years, died at the home of her grand-daughter, Mrs. W.M. Cassetty, yesterday. Mrs. Gilbert was one of Nashville's oldest citizens. She was born July 22, 1804 in Amherst County, VA and was christened Elizabeth Dancy Thurmond. In 1828 she came to Dickson County, Tenn with her family, when it was necessary to be accompanied by armed escorts as a protection from the savages. Mrs. Gilbert's first husband, Robert Collier, died in 1835 and five years later she married Capt. Thomas Gilbert, a wealthy steamboat owner, Cpt. Gilbert died in 1862. Mrs. Gilbert's children were Mrs. F.O. Hunt, Mrs. B.R. Cutter, Mrs. Phineas Garret and Robert C. Collier, all of who are dead. Her only near relatives now living are Mrs. L.T. Rhea and Mrs. W.M. Cassetty, two grand-daughters.
Mrs. Gilbert had been a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church since 1834, and was probably the oldest member of this denomination in the State. She had been sick for some time, but bore her sufferings with patience and Christian fortitude and when the summons came she sank peacefully to rest.
Her funeral will take place from the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Services being conducted by Rev. J.R. Henry in the the absence of the pastor, Rev. J.M. Hubbert
