Marjorie J. Smies, 98, Cedar Grove, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at Cedar Grove Gardens.

Marjorie was born Aug. 22, 1913, in the Town of Holland, to Dirk Willis and Pieternella (Dirkse) Beernick. On Feb. 17, 1934, Marjorie married Daniel G. Smies in Oostburg. Daniel passed away on Jan. 25, 1993. She worked part-time for the Calumet Dutch Packing Company in Cedar Grove and in the cafeteria for the Cedar Grove School System for many years.

Marjorie was a member of First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, where she was active in the choir. She loved spending time with her family and also enjoyed her card clubs, gardening and knitting.

Marjorie is survived by: two sons, John "Jack" (Margaret) Smies, Oostburg; and Frederic "Ric" (Ann) Smies, Homewood, Ill.; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Gloria Te Stroete, Cedar Grove; two sisters-in-law, Edith Beernink, Cedar Grove; and Lois (Wayne) Dulmes, Oostburg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel G. Smies; one sister, Carol (Irwin) TeRonde; two brothers, Glenn and Ivan Beernink; one brother-in-law, Dale Te Stroete.

Funeral services to celebrate Marjorie's life will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, with the Rev. Kent Vant Hul officiating. Interment will be in Oostburg Cemetery.
