..........
Bob D. Adkins, 78, of East Helena, our dear husband, father and papa, passed peacefully from our home to his heavenly home on July 23, 2011, after a short battle with cancer.
Bob was born on March 11, 1933, in Cascade, Idaho, to Hank and Lydia Adkins. He and his twin sister joined a loving family of four sisters and three brothers.
His family moved westward to "warmer" Oregon when Bob was a young boy. His father tried farming and then invested in a small saw mill, which brought together many of the family to work at the mill. Although Bob had some work to do, his life was filled with adventures in the woods, fishing the creeks with his dogs and riding his bike.
Jobs changed for his father and the family moved on to other towns settling in Sweet Home, Ore., where Bob graduated high school in 1952. Bob was very active in high school with music. He sang and organized his own band, known to all as the "Adkins Band." Music was a part of his home also, brothers with guitars and always singing.
The summer after graduation, Bob took a trip with his parents and twin sister to visit his brother and family in Boise, Idaho, and to go on a two-week camping trip. Also invited on that camping trip was his brother's sister-in-law, Shirley. A great camping trip and life of lasting love adventure had begun.
He started college at Oregon State but soon decided to serve his military commitment and joined the Army. On his first leave he returned to Boise to marry that girl from the camping trip. Bob and Shirley first said "I do" on Aug. 18, 1953, and from then on their lives were filled with many roads leading to untold stories and adventure.
The Army sent Bob to Fairbanks, Alaska, and San Francisco, and his new wife followed right along.
He became a proud father of a beautiful baby girl on Dec. 4, 1954, and was blessed again by his second beautiful daughter on Nov. 24, 1956.
Bob had many jobs leading him to Idaho, and in 1966 Texaco sent him to Helena, Montana, and that became the last best place to him. Bob pursued various careers including nursing home administrator, chemical dependence counselor and Montana Department of Transportation. Not wanting to retire, he became property manager for Glen Middlestead and thoroughly enjoyed the many challenges.
Bob is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, 3 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 2 great-grandsons, a one great-granddaughter, the fourth great-grandchild, is expected in January, 3 step-great-grandchildren, a brother, many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
