In 1930 he and his wife and their daughter lived in an apartment they were renting for $35 a month from her parents in their house at 7430 Duquesne Avenue in Swissvale, PA. They did not have a radio. He worked as a laborer for a switch manufacturing company.

In 1940 he and Sara and their two daughters lived in the same apartment. Her parents were charging them just $25 a month rent after the Great Depression. Esker worked as a bench hand for a signal manufacturer, with an income in 1939 of $1500 for 52 weeks of work.
