OBITUARY AND PHOTO FROM GARY'S FUNERAL HOME

Robert Pinkie Gardner Sr., 91 of Greenville, KY passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2012 in the Owensboro Medical Health System.

Mr. Gardner was born on November 21, 1920 to Albert and Hattie Danks Gardner in Butler County, Kentucky. He attended Lewisburg High School where he played on the only varsity basketball team to go to the state tournament. After high school, Mr. Gardner attended Bowling Green Business College and following graduation worked as a bookkeeper in the coalfields of West Virginia. Mr. Gardner joined the U.S. Army when World War II began and served in the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper and light-machine gun operator in the Philippines and Japan, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. Mr. Gardner married Helen Rae McReynolds after boot camp before going over- seas. After the war he moved to Greenville and worked as an accountant/office manager for L.B. Knight Motor Company and later Parham-Mansfield Motor Company. Mr. Gardner was a good Christian and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. "Who fought the good fight, finished the course and kept the faith." "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away-blessed be the name of the Lord." Mr. Gardner retired at the age of 83. He was a faithful member at 1st Baptist Church in Greenville and served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. He was a member of many civic organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Civitans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Helen Rae Gardner, a son Allen, his brothers Ralph and Pen Joe and a sister, Joyce Baker.

Mr. Gardner is survived by His sons: Robert P. Gardner II and his wife Lisa of Owensboro, John W. Gardner and his wife Cathy Covetts Gardner of Noblesville, IN; His cherished Grandchildren: Allen II, Ethan, Russell, Erin, Jordan, Hillary, Amelia, Haley, Natasha and Sara; Ten Great-Grandchildren; His sister: Hattie Ruth Shelton of Lewisburg, KY; His Uncle: Howard Danks of Lewisburg.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 am from Gary's Funeral Home, Greenville, KY by Dr. Charles Midkiff and Reverend Daniel Selman. Burial will be held in Lewisburg Cemetery in Lewisburg, KY.

Friends may call on Wednesday January 4, 2012 between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville and on Thursday after 9:00 am.
