SSGT KEVEN W. SHIRLEY, 50, died Saturday December 17, 2011 at Thornton Hospital, La Jolla, California.

He was born on June 22, 1961 at Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg.

He is the son of Ivan and Barbara Shirley and the late Beverly Hutton Shirley Moneypenny.

He graduated from Scottsburg High School and joined the Marines in 1980, finishing his basic training at MCRD in San Diego, CA. During this same year, he trained at an engineering school in Camp Lejeune, NC. He was assigned to two different companies before 1984 where he attended helicopter mechanic school in Tustin, Ca. From 1984 thru 1993 he was part of the HMH-465 helicopter squadron, which included different detachments to Okinawa, Japan and the Western Pacific Ocean, earning the Air Crew Wings, Marine Corps Expedition and National Defense Medal.
In 1993, he was deployed to Somalia on an operation called Restore Hope, receiving the Navy Achievement Medal, Overseas Ribbon, the United Nations and the Armed Forces Expedition Medal. After this mission, from 1994 thru 1997 he worked as a Recruiter for the Marine Corps. From 1997 thru June 2000 he went back to work with two different helicopter squadrons including a deployment to the Middle East. Receiving throughout his military career numerous ribbons and medals, he Retired in June 2000 from the United States Marine Corps.

Upon his retirement from the USMC, he joined the Department of Home Land Security as a Federal Customs and U.S. Border Protection officer based in Southern California.

He was a member of the Blue Knights® International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Imperial County, CA, Chapter X, which is a non-profit fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement men and women.

Survivors include his wife Norma E. Shirley; Daughter, Kayla L. Shirley; Son, Helio M. Millan; Brother Steve E. Shirley and Brother Mark A. (Bonita) Shirley; and his Aunt, Marilyn H. Chamberlain.

A Honorable Graveside service was provided by the U.S. Custom Border Protection Services Honor Guard and the United States Marine Corps Military Honors Guard at 2:00pm at Miramar National Cemetery, Miramar, California on Thursday December 22, 2011.
