At the age of 37, Orin joined Company D of the First Regiment of the Mounted Rangers. He joined on October 16, 1862, was a corporal, and was discharged for disability on April 26, 1863. It likely he served on Minnesota's frontier that winter, guarding and patrolling against invasions of the Indians.
Orin tried being a hotel keeper, purchasing an existing hotel in 1873. Orin otherwise lived with his family on a farm outside of Clearwater.
On October 23, 1875, Orin went to Nathan's home where his parents were living. Orin and Nathan had been quarreling over Nathan's care of their elderly parents. Orin chased Nathan around the kitchen table and Nathan picked up a gun that discharged and killed Orin.
