This is his honorary cenotaph. His burial location is in the Abner Creek Cemetery in Hendricks County.In North Lawn Cemetery in Avon, Indiana is a gravestone for John S. Ragan and his two wives, Jennie and Mary. On the front (south) side of the stone are the inscriptions for John and his 2nd wife, Mary. On the left (west) side is the inscription for his 1st wife, Jennie. On the back (north) side is a cenotaph for family buried in this cemetery. It reads:

James was the son of Mary S. (McCoun) and Abner Ragan, the man for whom this cemetery is named. James married Lucy Ann Smith on August 27, 1846 in Hendricks County, Indiana. In 1850, he and Lucy were living in Marion Township, Hendricks County with a New Winchester, Indiana address. He was a farmer. They had two children, Mary, age 3, and John S, age 1. By 1860 they had five more children. The family was listed in the 1860 census as follows: James, age 38; Lucy A, age 37; Mary A, age 13; John S, age 11; Zechariah, age 9; Abner, age 9; Reuben, age 7; James B, age 3; and William H, age 1. In 1870, only one additional child, Milton, age 5, was listed in the census record.
