Alexander Scott Aiken was born on February 2, 1846 in Slippery Rock Township, Pennsylvania to William Findley and Margaret (Vaneman) Aiken. "At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, 161st Regiment, was promoted to sergeant of Company I, and served until the end of the war". He kept several diaries from the Civil War until his death in 1914. "In 1865 he entered the Westminster College, Pennsylvania, and graduated from that institution in 1870. He completed his theological course in Allegheny City. April 15, 1873, he was licensed to preach, and was ordained April 29, 1875, by the presbytery of Big Spring, Pennsylvania". He became pastor of Airville United Presbyterian Church on January 1, 1875.

"He was joined in marriage April 5, 1882. with Miss Mary J., daughter of George and Sarah (Cummins) Porter, of Huntingdon County, Penn. They now reside in the newly erected parsonage of the Airville congregation. Rev. Mr. Aiken is finely educated, and is a gentleman worthy of encouraging success in the ministry".

From Dennis Brandt: "The son of William F. & Lydia Elizabeth (Vaneman) Aiken, in 1860 he was a teacher living in Slippery Rock, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at New Brighton, Beaver County, as a sergeant with Co. I, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry (161st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1865.

A graduate of Westminster College, he moved to York County and on January 1, 1875, became pastor of Airville U. M. Church, although he would not be ordained until nearly four months later. He married Mary Jane Porter on April 5, 1882, but children, if any, are unknown. In 1890, he lived in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, where he died from "septicemia from a large carbuncle on neck" with "Bright's disease and generally impoverished condition" contributing factors."
