Born in Mooresville, she
was the daughter of the late
Oscar L. and Margaret Waugh
Brown. She worked at Brown's
Swimming Pool, a family
owned business, the first town
swimming pool open to the
public. Mrs. Howard later
graduated from nursing
school in Shelby. She moved to
Durham in 1938 and was a
nurse for many years at Duke
Medical Center and Duke Stuent
and Community Health
Offices. After retirement Mrs.
Howard worked as a volunteer
with the Duke Cancer Center
& Hospice. She was a long
time member of Duke Memorial
United Methodist
Church in Durham.
Mrs. Howard was married
to William Kenneth Howard,
who preceded her in death in
1993.
Survivors include her
daughter, Tiffany C. Howard
of Appomattox, Va.; sons, William
K. Howard Jr. of Orlando,
Fla. and James B. Howard of
Wake Forest; brothers Walter
L. Brown, Vance Brown and
Carl A. Brown, all of Mooresville;
grandchildren, Kelly
Howard of Herndon, Va., Kevin
Howard of Atlanta, Ga.
and Eric Howard of Augusta,
Ga. and one great-grandson.
A memorial service was
