Simplicity to mark services for one of city's most respected and aged residents

Burial at Oak Grove

Simplicity will mark the funeral services Friday afternoon for Mrs. Emily R. Hess, one of the oldest and most beloved residents of Uniontown, who died at 7 o'clock Wednesday morning at her home in the Fayette Title and Trust building, where she had resided for many years.
Friends will be received at the residence, Room 920, until the hour of the funeral, which will be at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Rites will be in charge of Rev. W. H. Hanna, pastor of the Knoxville Christian church, assisted by Rev. LeRoy F. Carter, of Central Christian church, Uniontown. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Emmette F. Hanna, Uniontown; Merle Griffin, Smock; Homer Hess and Dr. Frank Hess, Unontown; Emerson Hess, Pittsburgh, and Walter Ramsey, Smithfield.
Descended from one of Fayette county's best known pioneer families, Mrs. Hess had rounded out 93 years and seven months to the day, having been born February 21, 1845, in the old homestead near Old Frame, Nicholson township. She was the daughter of William P. and Mary A. Griffin, one of a family of thirteen children, of whom only three are living.
Possessed of a lovable personality, Mrs. Hess had countless friends throughout the city and county who deeply treasured her friendship and the privilege of being associated with her in the various organizations of which she was a member.
In failing health for the past several months, Mrs. Hess did not become seriously ill until Sunday, and death which terminates a long and exceptionally active life of service, comes as a shock to hundreds of Uniontown residents.
In October, 1866, she was married to Clark R. Hess, who preceded her in death, March 24, 1905. For the past 35 years she had made her home in Uniontown, where she was a devoted member of the Central Christian church, and of Colonel Andrew Lynn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are twin daughters, Mrs. Britt R. Goodwin, Morgantown street, and Mrs. Nellie Cline, with whom she resided; three grandchildren, Clark, Mary Emily and Stella Goodwin; and one great grandchild. Mrs. Hess is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Annie B. Emory of Old Frame and Mrs. Alvin West, of Crawford county; and one brother, George F. Griffin, Old Frame. Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were one daughter Florence, who died in 1913; four brothers and five sisters.
