Bertie is a Gold Star Mom, she was the mother of a WWII Japanese POW, S1C Waldo Stedem Hale who was(from my pieced together research) in Bataan Death March, & then killed in prison camp, she also had 2 other sons who served in WWII in US Army, Corp. Clyde & Tec 4 Earl Hale, her son Junior Lee Hale served in Air Force in the Korean Conflict.....

Bertie was also a Life Member of the American Legion Auxillary in Saybrook, McLean Co, Illinois.

She was also a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church til 1968 when the United Brethren & Methodist merged, she then became a member of Wesbien United Methodist Church in Saybrook, IL

NOTE: Bertie recieved a Gold Star Mom pin presented in Aug. 1947 by Dept. of Defense to mom's who lost sons in WWII. On May 29, 2017 I am setting a Gold Star Mom grave medalion that my brother & I got for Grandma's gravesite.

I also found in research one of the men Uncle Waldo served with in Philippines with was a Groseclose cousin related to grandma, her paternal grandfather David Walter Spangler 1st wife was Christina Groseclose....I am sure Uncle Waldo & Groseclose from Idaho did not know they were cousins.....
