PIONEER ASPENITE, MRS. SMULLING, 94, DIES SEPTEMBER 14

One of Aspen's pioneer residents, Mrs. Theosco [sic] Smulling, died Friday, Sept. 14, at the age of 94 in the Mountain View Nursing Home, Glenwood Springs.

Born in Kansas in 1868, Mrs. Smulling came to Aspen in its mining heyday and was one of its oldest remaining residents. Her husband, a veterinarian, preceded her in death several years ago.

Interment was at the Red Butte Cemetery on Monday, Sept. 17. The Rev. Keith Merriman read graveside services, attended by the deceased's one surviving son, Mike, from Denver.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Smulling is survived by a daughter and several grandchildren.

DEATH OF MRS. PEABODY

Mrs. Sherm Smulling received word Sunday that her sister, Mrs. Louise Peabody, had passed away at her home in Grand Junction Saturday night at 12 ' clock from the effects of an operation. Her mother, Mrs. Daywalt, left on Saturday night's train for Mrs. Peabody's bedside but found her daughter dead on her arrival at Grand Junction. Mrs. Peabody was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Daywalt of this city and was 42 years old at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband and five children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daywalt, and two sisters, Mrs. Sherm Smulllng and Mrs. William Young, who reside here and a sister, Mrs. Lee Smulllng at Grand Junction, a sister Mrs. Florence Kearney at Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Frank Daywalt at Basalt and Hamilton Daywalt whose present location is not known. Mrs. Smulllng and two daughters, Frankie and Shermie, left on Sunday evening's Midland to attend the funeral. The family have the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.
