Family History

Zoe graduated from Chadron High School in 1915, one of a class of five, all girls. On April 20, 1918 in Chadron, Dawes Co., Nebraska Zoe, age 19, married John Kenneth (Red) Mackey for the first time. Zoe's marriage to Red Mackey ended in divorce (possibly forced by Johns' family) in Salt Lake County, Utah on 08 January 1920. Zoe resumed her maiden name and moved back home to live with her mother Elsie and step-father John C. Bailey.

On 31 May 1920, Zoe married Ferdinand Merritt in Lusk, Niobrara County, Wyoming. Ferdinand had a homestead north of Hat Creek, Wyoming, where he had built a "log house 12 X 26 feet." Patent No. 013854 was granted on 19 December 1921. Not too long after that, Ferdinand and Zoe moved back to Nebraska. Ferdinand had the marriage 21 December 1927 in Box Butte County, Nebraska because he discovered that Zoe had married him before the six month "prohibition" period following her divorce decree from John Mackey was over and therefore her marriage to Ferdinand was invalid.

Zoe graduated from Chadron State College on 14 Aug 1925 at age 26 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Her thesis topic was on the environment, before the environment was a hot topic. She moved to Southern California in May 1926. At the time of the 1930 Census, Zoe was living in the Winton Apartment Hotel at 219 South Flower St. in the "Bunker Hill" area of Los Angeles, CA. Her rent was $45 a month, and she was working as a bookkeeper for a public utility company. Zoe swam Johnny Weissmuller, five-time Olympic Gold Medalist in the 1920 and 1924 Olympics, and Tarzan of 1930's screen fame.

In the 1937 list of Alumni of Chadron State College Zoe was married to Dean Moore, living at 3923 West 6th St. in Los Angeles. She gave her occupation as "homemaker." By World War II they were divorced. Zoe loved being a divorcee in World War II Los Angeles. She fell in love with an army officer from Lebanon who was married. They corresponded for many years, but eventually lost touch with each other.

In 1950, Zoe moved to Iowa Hill, Placer County where she taught school in Iowa Hill, Colfax, Weimar, and Blue Canyon. In 1960, she was elected Teacher of the Year by the Donner Trail Education Association, the local group of the California Teachers Association.

After her retirement in the early 1960's, Zoe briefly moved back to Los Angeles, where she reconnected with her original flame, Red Mackey. They decided to try again, and in July 1962 they remarried and moved to northern California. However, the relationship didn't work out, and they soon divorced.

In 1968, Zoe moved to Gold Run, Placer Co., California, where she lived until she developed Alzheimer's near the end of her life, when she moved into the Hilltop Manor Convalescent Hospital in Auburn, Placer Co., where she passed away at age 87 on December 14, 1986.
