OBITUARY
George L. C. Leistikow, 89, of Burr Oak, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at his home.
George Louis Carl Leistikow was born April 15, 1908, near Donnan, in Fayette County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Ida (Warnke) Leistikow. He was baptized May 31, 1908, at the Windsor Church in Fayette County. He moved to Winneshiek County March 1, 1920, at the age of 11.
Leistikow was confirmed May 20, 1923, at St. Paul German Evangelical Church in Burr Oak by the Rev. Christian Pieper. He received his education in the rural schools of Fayette and Winneshiek counties.
Leistikow was united in marriage with Minnie Nelson Feb. 17, 1933, at the Lutheran parsonage in Harmony, Minn. by the Rev. O. C. Brenna. George was a farmer until his retirement in 1973.
He was a charter member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church, organized in 1928, held various church offices and served on many committees. He was a member of the building committee when the church building was doubled in size.
Leistikow was a longtime member of the Board of Hesper School, District No. 4, a Farm Bureau member, a 4-H leader for many years and belonged to the Heartwood Club of Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. He was honored in 1991 by the State of Iowa for his volunteer work.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie; six children, Donald and Joanne Leistikow of Decorah, Joanne Engebretson of Edina, Norman and Marty Leistikow of Bloomington, Carole and Loren Evenrud of Minneapolis, Mary and Charles Casterton and Doris and Randy Patterson of Decorah; one brother, Carl and Lenora Leistikow of Decorah; one sister, Helen and Charles Fravel of Preston, one sister-in-law, Winifred Leistikow of Canton; and one brother-in-law, Arnold Osenga of Cresco; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Leistikow was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frederick, Herman and Ervin; one sister, Amelia Smith; one grandson, Randy Leistikow; one great-granddaughter, Erin Engebretson; and one sister-in-law, Olga Osenga.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Renae McIntosh was the organist. Soloist Harold Pederson sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Rock of Ages."
Casket bearers were his grandchildren. Burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral home handled the arrangements.
