Car Kills Bluffton Student

BLUFFTON - A midnight frog hunt near here, involving eight boys, ended in death for a 16-year-old Bluffton High School sophomore, when he was run over by a car about 4 a.m. Saturday on Phillips Road one-mile north of Interstate 75.

The victim, Richard Eugene Ferrall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Ferrall of Rt. 2, died about 5:30 a.m. Saturday in Bluffton Community Hospital.

Allen County Coroner Dr. William E. Noble ruled his death accidental due to a crushed chest and a broken neck.

According to Ohio State Highway patrolmen, Ferrall apparently was lying in the center of Phillips Road when a southbound car, driven by Ronald L. Morrison, 16, of Rt. 1, a friend and classmate of the victim, ran over the youth's body.

Patrolmen said Morrison, who was traveling alone, told them he saw the Ferrall boy lying in the road, braked the car and swerved to the left, but could not avoid running over the boy. The car then went off the road's left side, hit a fence and ran into a field, officers said.

Accident details are sketchy pending further investigation, patrolmen said, but apparently the driver and the victim, with six other boys were together earlier on a frog hunt. The nearest water is Little Riley Creek, which crosses Phillips Road about three quarters of a mile north of the accident scene.

Two other boys were in the accident area when the accident occurred, officers said, but there apparently were no accident witnesses.

The youth was taken by Basing Ambulance to the hospital, where he died about an hour and a half later.

Ferrall was the 17th traffic fatality of the year in Allen County, and the only Limaland traffic death thus far during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Basinger Funeral Home, Rev. Paul Allen officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. today.

Born in Bluffton, Jan. 19, 1952, he was the son of Rex W. and Nettie Basinger Ferrall, who survive along with a brother, Michael, and three sisters, Vickie, Nancy and Cathy, all at home.

Just completing his sophomore year at Bluffton High School, he was a member of Future Farmers of America and the Church of Christ, Beaverdam.
