Doris F. Jefferson, 67, passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at Providence Hospital with loving family members at her side. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at Toliver Chapel Baptist Church, 1402 Elm Street, Waco, with Pastor Jimmy Hunter officiating.

Doris was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Anna and Fred Freeman. She graduated from G.W. Carver High School and later attended Bishop College in Dallas, and Prairie View A&M College in Prairie View. She was a faithful member of Toliver Chapel Baptist Church and attended regularly until her health declined. Doris had a great sense of humor and a smile that would light up the room.

She was highly intelligent and never met a task that she couldn't accomplish. She was a natural leader and advisor who was often consulted by family members and others for her sage advice. Her advice was always on point and always centered on her belief in God.

Doris had an immense love of family. She particularly watched over her kids and youngest siblings. Throughout their lives, she called them every day of their adult lives until God called her home. Doris constantly told them that as long as they had God and family, they would never have to worry. During her lifetime, she provided love, comfort and care for at least 13 foster children. She made sure that they were fully incorporated as family members and knew the meaning of family.

She loved to travel and spent time living and working in Colorado Springs, West Germany, San Francisco, and Dallas before returning to Waco. In 1978, she began her employment at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Waco, where she remained employed until her untimely death.

She leaves to cherish her memory son, Craig Tilford Sr., of Houston; daughter, Phelecia Jefferson, of Waco; grandchildren, Traivohn Jefferson and Craig Tilford Jr.; brothers, Freddy Jr. and wife, Lillie, and Eddy, of Waco, Donald and wife, Rose, of Hewitt, Billy and wife, Tracey, of San Diego, Calif., and Alton and wife, Annie, of San Antonio; sisters, Verma Clark, of Houston, and Patricia Ford and husband, Charles, of Accokeek, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
